Friday Update - April 23, 2021

(Written by Todd Plimpton)

Last night was very lightly attended which has been typical recently for several reasons, weather, stimulus checks, etc., but it was a beautiful night regardless. Tommy and Gina are on a much-needed getaway with family so after being told I was NOT Gina several times things really got cool. A wonderful meal provided by Granite Ridge Builders, thank you, was appreciated by all which added to the many conversations with our friends downtown. I don't say that lightly. They are our friends. They are my friends. Romans 12: 14-16 says it well particularly 16, " Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation." There is something special happening down there, a family of sorts is growing amongst the ones we serve and those serving. It is not drudgery, it's joy. I'm learning about lives, extended families, heartbreak, successes, loss, hopelessness, and hope. And it is a two-way street, they help us as often as we help them. A sweet and precious vulnerability in a parking lot in downtown Fort Wayne. I met a new friend late in the evening who I've never seen before. He was disheveled, wobbly, and quiet. Not so long ago I would have said hi, looked at the ground, and scurried away to "minister". This time I said hello and asked him how he was. He recently had a stroke and was just now able to walk around. We had a deep conversation on and off the rest of the night. It was an honor for me to see him smile as he left and to be invited into his life. Priceless.....actually no, it cost Jesus His life to make moments like that possible. Deep thanks to all the volunteers, those who donate time and resources. Again thank you Granite Ridge for the meal and willingness to serve. Special thanks to Tommy and Gina Burns for trusting us to fill in for them last night.
